I could never get into Hellraiser. I know I saw the first one and probably the second one but my memories are really limited to just the horrific scenes. The first one sounds better than I remember.

The first movie is really about the characters and I think the interesting notion is that it's not monsters snatching people for no reason, it's about people who seek out Hell on their own. The Cenobites aren't the monsters, it's Frank and Julia.

On the other hand, Roger Ebert gave this a half-star out of four saying it lacked imagination.

At the time, I was going through a period where I felt new stuff was very shallow and older stuff was much better. Music, movies, comics. I remember discarding Hellraiser as a movie that just took the already established slasher norms to the next level without adding anything of substance. I was 18 at the time and thought I knew everything, so I can reassess my opinion. I wonder if Ebert ever re-evaluated the film?

I certainly remember the "Time to play" from the ad campaign for the second movie.

I remember that tagline too, although watching the trailers again it's not as strong as the trailer for the first movie with "We'll tear your soul apart!" Yikes.

I don't think I gave these movies enough of a chance back then.

They are unpleasant. I was surprised by how bloody part 2 is, skinless Julia walking around for the first 40 minutes and a lot of kills. I can't think of many movies since then that were as bloody.

I can deal with the unpleasantness. I think my mind wasn't accepting at the time. I'd like to rewatch them, or watch the whole series for the first time, but I've got so much stuff I'd like to watch. I'd like to watch all the Halloween movies. There's a part of me that wants to rewatch the whole Godzilla series and I just watched them a couple of years ago. Heck, I'd like to reread all my Marvel Essentials from the Silver Age! lol Too much stuff!
