B5 was supposed to have five years to tell complete story. Starting in season three the network began pressuring JMS to wrap it up. It was not certain they would even get a season four. The fourth season had to cram so much into it that it does seem like two. JMS even did that twenty years later story to make sure it would have some closure. Of course another network stepped in giving him that final year.
By the fourth season the show reached its zenith though season five was good. Someone stole JMS whole bible for season five and I am sure that forced changes to his story.

Aye the S5 bible was indeed stolen, and he had to recreate it presumably with some changes

S5 sets up things like the Telepath War, Londo also faces his destiny, a new menace begins to loom in the shadows....

Also another B5 TV-movie that sets up the spin-off Crusade which sadly went one season.

The Legions of Fire novel trilogy deals with Centauri Prime after the TV show ends

The Technomage trilogy deals with them, and spotlights the mage Galen who would help set up the spin off series and appears in that series. It also adds more about what happened to Sheridan's wife when the Shadows got her

The Novel to Dream in the City of Sorrows shows us how Sinclair setup shop as the ambassador on Minbar, and how he began to rebuild the rangers, his fiance appears in it, as does Marcus

And the PSi Corp trilogy of novels gives is the rise of the Corps, the life and times of Bester and final showdown with him and Garibaldi after the Telepath War. The novels do not go into much details of the war, and no TV-movie or mini series was ever made that covered it.

Also those novels listed above are canon per JMS
