You know, I've never seen Reality Bites. A while back on this board I made a case for Baz Lurhmann's Romeo + Juliet, reimagining a classic with a modern flair in the MTV Beachhouse style. But for some reason I also thought of Empire Records. I also just watched Airheads for the first time in years and it struck me as very 90s. Kids today probably don't even think about radio stations anymore.

I can assure you, kids today know broadcast radio. My niece (almost 12) has her stations on preset. But this might be because no one in our family has a car younger than 2010. None of us have Sirius XM either. Outside of the car, I don't think she'd listen to radio.

My 16 year old daughter knows all the songs on the radio, but that's not saying much since most of them play the same 100 or so songs. It is cool that she likes Queen, Green Day and ELO though. I wish I knew more about her current musical tastes, though. I figure there's gotta be something beyond what's on the radio for kids today. The last "genre" I gave listen to was "screamo" about 10 years ago and I thought, "maybe rock has already peaked".

What about the most 80s movie? WarGames? E.T.? Goonies? Breakfast Club?

It's almost impossible for me to choose between Breakfast Club, Bueller's, and Sixteen Candles. IMO, John Hughes directed the "real" 80s (not counting scifi/fantasy/action). Mad props to Fast Times though. That was MY "coming of age" movie, but it's way too early-80s to represent the whole decade.

Definitely those John Hughes movies for the 80s. I'd also add Less Than Zero, though it certainly doesn't represent my life from the time.

And yeah, what Nose said about Reality Bites, Singles, and Clerks.
