> Spiderman's beaten Iron Man - Wouldn't have happened if Tony was trying. I think Tony's feeling pretty wretched at the moment with the loss of a lot of his friends. > > I suspect the damage done to Tony by crappy writers trying to Hype Marvel sales is going to stay with him for years. I hate Iron Man and the SHRA!! Whoo hoo! I hope he gets beat by Forbush Man next! Sorry...I just had to say that. But i'll square it up a little bit - First, if the damage done to Tony's character lasts for years, it'll be because Marvel made it so - much like people always getting on Hank Pym for being a wife beater after he's been rehabilitated for years now. Mostly, I think that if you took a real-world look at the SHRA, you'd realize that it's a violation of human rights and in direct defiance of the Constitution. Sacrificing the rights of a few - without choice of will or conscience of those whose rights are neglected - just so people can "feel safer" never held water to me. It's really a losing argument when you weigh it all - and the worst part for IM is that it looks like he manipulated events and controlled the whole process so that he could be the leader of the registered heroes. I feel for IM fans, I think he got a literary shaft in this whole thing - no matter how nobly he fights for the cause and with how much belief or conviction - SHRA is everything IM used to fight against. IM got sucked into the Bendis characterization vortex and has come out a little shrunken, in my opinion. As for everyone whipping Tony in a fight lately, well, Marvel has gotta capitalize on current events. Seeing as how he's in every stinkin' book that comes out, he may as well take an occasional beating. I would argue that overconfidence, and severe underestimation of Spidey would get IM beaten 8 times out of 10. See the third issue of Avengers; Initiative to see Spidey outsmart War Machine as an appetizer to that theory...though he did have an answer for Pete in his own book during Civil War. Hang in there. I have a suspicion that when all is said and done, Tony will be a Skrull double-agent or something - meaning that the Skrulls think he is one of them, but he is really the true Tony Stark, posing until he can find a way to defeat the upcoming Skrull invasion. Then everyone will be feeling the love for Tony again and all will be right in the tin-can-iverse. | |||||||
