By equating support of gay marriage with disdain for the new direction, and showing disdain for those who disdain the new direction, he is effectively showing disdain for gay marriage. Or, to put it more bluntly, he is saying to some fans "Ha ha, you support gay marriage."

I respectfully disgree. I don't think it came across that way, and my opinion on that has nothing to do with my position on OMD or BND. If I thought he were being anti-gay I'd say so. I think instead he was trying to make an analogy that made people reconsider their logic and position on the marriage, essentually painting the argument for gay marriage in a positive light. Granted, it's a flawed analogy, but I think it's "typical Internet behavior" to accuse him of being anti-gay and homophobic.
