With Norman making his first appearance in ASM in a loooong time, it got me to thinking about my favorite Spidey/Goblin stories. My favs are: 1-ASM #39-40, 2-Spectacular Spiderman #2 (reprinted in ASM Annual #9), 3-Spiderman #75, 4-AMS #25/PPSM #25, 5-ASM #121-122. I also really like a "Death In The Family" in PPSM #44-47, but the art just kills that story for me. And I know it didn't involve Spiderman, but the Goblin's appearance in Thunderbolts #121 was one of the best Goblin stories I've ever read. Norman at his baddest.
Norman's involvement post-Clone Saga - the whole darned thing - was really great, starting with Revelations/Osborn Journal and going all the way up until Byrne came on board. I couldn't really pick out a single story because he had a hand in so many pockets story-wise (owning the Bugle, "helping" Flash, etc) and also the writing staff at the time was fantastic - each writer did a good job characterizing Norman and his relationship with Peter, Jonah, and the rest of the cast. The Spider-Hunt storyline was superb - you really couldn't tell how far you could trust Norman regarding Little Normie's safety, and actually the issue before it with the cover of Spidey in the snowstorm (I think it was an issue of Peter Parker) continually sticks out in my mind. Specifically, Peter sees the Goblin on a roof in the snowstorm, pumpkinbomb in hand, rushes up there, and...Nothing. Nobody's there. Simply put, Norman was haunting at that period in time.
And since it's favorite Green Goblin stories and not Norman stories, the two-part team-up between Ben as the Scarlet Spider and Phil as the Green Goblin against Joystick and the Great Game is one of my favorite stories ever.
-Pav, who has said it before and will say it again: I really hoped that would be the Spider/Goblin relationship of the future...
