What is most curious is the fact that in the Pre-Flashpoint Continuity (Supergirl #7 to be exact), Ultraman is seen using machines to bombard him with solar energy in order to keep himself powered up in Kandor. So Liheibao is right, there is more than one version of Ultraman. Either that or the writer forgot that he's powered by Kryptonite.

That's right, there are more than One version of Ultraman and the Crime Syndicate, or rather there have been.

Grant Morrison reintroduced them in his Earth-2 special and had Ultraman as earthman Clark Kent, who was a space pilot who encounters aliens while on a mission into space and they rebuild him into a Superman who needs a rare exostic mineral called Kryptonite to remain powered. Geoff Johns' Earth-2 features a Crime Syndicate that is all but identical to Morrison's, but we note his Ultraman is now Kal-el's doppelganger - Kal-il. Rocketed from a dying Krypton (destroyed by the Anti-Monitor's gradual attack and decimation of this universe as we discover), and sent to earth to adopt a life of evil and wanton thuggery while posing as Clark kent, alongside Superwoman's Lois Lane. Like any other Ultraman he needs Kryptonite, unlike others however he must stay away from sunlight as, in a neat inversion of Superman vs Kryptonite, it will drive the Kryptonite radiation from his cells and leave him powerless and in agony.

This Ultraman and his Crime Syndicate are all but gone after Geoff Johns has finished with his Justice League run and the Darkseid versus Anti-Monitor storyline. But without a doubt another earth will be found out there and a new and almost identical Crime Syndicate to be found on it...
