I wouldn't necessarily say that. It think it's about respecting the sandbox they are playing in. A lot of creators get a big head and think that they own the sandbox.

Jason Aaron, for example, may do a fantastic job in a sandbox of his own creation. He's not that great at playing in Marvel's sandbox. Cates, similarly, plays more by his own rules than Marvel's (which, at this point to be fair, don't appear to exist).

I think a good Marvel writer is someone who is at least aware of the shared universe, understands the constraints but doesn't see these constraints as a burden to his/her creativity. The perfect example would, IMO, be Kieron Gillen. He's not my favorite writer, but to me he represents the top of the food chain from this angle.
