Morality on PARdise island is quite different to what we find acceptable, especially so in this new continuity.
What I find interesting about the 'lie' is that despite this extreme society Diana grew up to be very moral and with a powerful sense of right and wrong. While Hippolyta's lie was based on fear and the need to protect the lie itself was expanded upon to give Diana an idyllic childhood where the darker side of Amazon culture was deliberately shielded from her. One might speculate that this may have been based on Hippolyta's awareness that what they practised in some areas was indeed immoral, but an aspect too often ignored by writers is just how much 3000 years in exile, no contact with the outside word, would change a society like this.
Diana rebelled when she learned the truth, but given the lie led to her becoming the moral champion she is the fact then is her mother did a very good job in raisinng her. She ensured her daughter would be better than herself, better than her generation of Amazons, and progressive in her thinking.
