I think it was when Cassandra Nova outed the Xavier's school as a mutant school. It stepped up the pressure on the X-men, particularly Cyclops to always be vigilant and significantly increased the number of attacks on the x-men's home turf.

If they had retained their secret identities, Scott could have had the time to consider the path he was taking without the pressure of mutantkind being exterminated every other week.

I know people want a blatant reason like that, but Cyke's merging with Apocalypse seems to be just as quickly forgotten by Marvel's writers as Wolverine's time as War and Gambit's time as Death (post Messiah War).

Personally, I just think mentioning the Apocalypse thing would call too much attention to the fact that Cyclops has been wrong in recent years.

The X-Men now have a complete royal flush:

Apocalypse: Cyclops
War: Wolverine
Famine: Sunfire
Death: Archangel
Pestilence: Polaris
