It's in-character, but it also strikes me a misstep given that the appeal of the character -- especially in this very arc -- has been that he's a fun swashbuckling type. Losing his soul seems like hamfisted way to introduce ridiculous angst, the very sort of thing that derailed Nightcrawler in the years before his marginalization and death. Not every character needs to be a sad clown.
