Briefly skimming through some old stuff and weeding out defunct worthless books for potential disposal I came across a few issues of Dazzler from the early 80s, not a great book, but a couple of the issues I have contain a subplot with Mystique, Destiny, and Rogue in full villain mode and plotting against the Angel and Dazzler...

While this followed a similar trajectory to the feud Mystique and Rogue had with Ms Marvel earlier on it did make me think on the rationale for it all. It has largely been brushed over by the passing of the years, but Rogue is full-on sociopathic in these early appearances. Vicious, volatile and spiteful the reader is in no doubt she means it when she says she will break Dazzler in two. First it was Ms Marvel she fixated on, now it is Dazzler. This story is set just after Avengers Annual #10 and Rogue has finished Carol Danvers and taken her powers permanently; obviously she has no conscience or remorse about any of this but her lack of control or discipline does leave the question as to how the supercool Mystique tolerated this increasingly brutal and unhinged attitude.
Taking an overall view of her early years the fact that Rogue undergoes a minor personality transplant when she joins the X-men and turns into a convert does rise the strong possibility that this might have been Carol Danvers' influence on her... it's such an abrupt shift in persona that I am left wondering if these early years, and her violence in them, have been addressed in more recent years - Was Rogue corrupted by Mystique and her villainous lifestyle perhaps, or is it the case that her own power was the cause of her psychological state during that time? \(euh\)

Just brash youth thuggery, and it was a very brief thing. Dazzler was part of a mission objective that went against Rogue, and she developed a brief resentment. This was all put to rest later in Uncanny after Dazzler joined. There really hasn't been any reason to go back to it in decades. People know Rogue's past and her present and have accepted it.

The Carol thing ended up being an extremely humbling thing to Rogue and brought about a lot of introspection, in more ways than one. Before this, she was certainly on her way to being completely corrupted by Mystique's lifestyle.
