It makes perfect sense. Think about it- after X-Men 95, Warpath thinks Nefaria is dead. Nefaria is revealed to be alive in Avengers 164-166, winds up hospitalized at the end of that story, is seemingly killed in Iron Man 116, and the heroes don't learn that he survived until after Onslaught. So Warpath thought Nefaria was dead for most of the time period between his brother's death and Onslaught, except for a few months Marvel-time when Nefaria was hospitalized, and by Onslaught he'd long abandoned the idea of revenge for his brother's death.
