I'm so glad I lost patience with his writing. I lost patience quickly with every fan favorite writer: Morrison, Bendis, Fraction, Slott, Millar, Loeb, Hickman, JMS. I don't understand the mindset of the fans who like these guys. Or maybe I just don't respect it. "Ooh! Shiny! Never saw that before! Must have - must have - must have!" They're like ferrets.
(looks at every name on the list, double checks)
Yeah I don't like any of those guys either. I didn't like Morrison's run per se but I did like seeing all the oddball students that popped up. The stories were awful but I liked seeing all the colorful weirdos. But I guess liking a book because it was a where's waldo of weirdos isn't the right approach.
Right when I needed a good laugh - that gave me one! Thank you!
Yeah, all those guys made their names by doing things their predecessors had never done and wouldn't have done because to do so would have violated the essence of the characters as created. This drew the attention of the kind of personality that loves seeing essences get violated. "Ooh! Look! Batman is using a gun! Never saw that before! Gotta buy it!" All those prior writers who understood that Batman must never use a gun because his parents died by gunshot are viewed as stodgy and hidebound. Those prior writers, if they're still writing, fall out of fashion, and eventually have trouble finding work.
Funny thing is, the essences always win in the end. A story arc with Batman firing a gun may get published and generate a ton of buzz and maybe win the writer an award or two, but a year later you won't see a gun in Batman's hand, because, in the end, everyone knows it was wrong to put one there in the first place. But of course by then the award-winning writer will have moved on to some new book and some new essence to violate.
