I didn't see Apocalypse. Maybe I should have. I just stopped paying attention to the X films. They lost me.

So I didn't even realize Storm was in that movie and Alexandra Shipp played her. Did I miss something really good? Was she better than Halle Berry? (What am I saying? Of course she was. Anyone would be a better Storm than Halle Berry. Bill Murray? Better Storm than Halle Berry.)

I was googling articles and I saw this weird criticism about Shipp being too light-skinned. I mean, OK, yes, she's light-skinned. But that just seems a weird thing to focus on. Here's what I want to know: Was she badass? That, to me, is what matters. Storm is like Rodan and King Ghidora combined. Did Shipp make you believe that? Storm could destroy Tokyo single-handedly. I want to look in the actress's eyes and see the lightning and the whirlwind. Would I have been disappointed, do you think?

IMO, every single second of Berry's Storm felt phoned-in and lifeless, like she was content to sit back put zero effort. It was really tough to see an actor I know can perform better do nothing. And as a Storm fan, I felt insulted. "Strangely" enough, Berry did pretty much the same with Catwoman. Maybe she just can't be a good comic book character. Or maybe she just "won't."

Shipp actually made her scenes seem believable to me.

I'm conflicted about the skin colour thing. Comics are a very visual thing. To me, Storm should be a deep, dark brown skin colour, especially because X-Men are still relatively new to live action (Supes and Bats are about 70-80 years into live action). It's more important to get the X-Men visually correct in this nascent period. My complaint about this is no different than my complaint about current Storm's black hair roots.

Also, imo, there are tons of great dark-skinned actors. I think a big part of the reason both were chosen to be Storm was not because of their talent, but because they are light-skinned. The industry does this way too often.

Given the chance, I think Kiki Layne could be a better Storm than Shipp, based on her talent and appearance.
