So mutant lycanthropy is taken as a metaphor for transsexualism. In retrospect it isn't so surprising but I never would have thought of it on my own.

I'm not reading the book so I didn't know Rahne was beaten to death on the street by a bunch of thugs. Did she lose her powers? Did she refuse to defend herself? Seems like, if she had her powers, she should be able to defeat a bunch of thugs. But she would have had to maul them. Actually, though, if she had her powers, she should have been able to simply escape.
