Basically, as far as I can tell, if the dot is red, it means you haven't yet opened (read) the post. Once you've read it, the dot turns blue and the letters of the header (subject) turn from blue to purple.

If you don't read a post, then the dot turns yellow after a certain number of days and after a few more days it turns blue. However in this case the writing stays blue.

In the case of your own posts, the dot will usually be blue and the text will also be blue, unless you later go back and revise it, in which case the text will become purple.
